In this model the lower disc (in red) is bulging to the right side and is not returning to its normal position.
As the spine bends laterally from left to right the lower disc is causing the spine to tower to the left and this is causing lower back pain.
In most disc injury cases the facet joints are also involved causing pain and stiffness.
Disc injuries can cause a range of symptoms from no pain to severe pain, and from no nerve symptoms to full nerve compression and neurological deficit.
In rare cases of disc injury emergency surgery is required.
