How it works
Chiropractic care works by improving how your joints and muscles function as a system—helping you move more freely, reduce sensitivity, and return to normal activity.
Chiropractic care is a trusted and established form of physical therapy that focuses on restoring mobility, reducing pain, and improving your quality of life. Whether you’re struggling with back pain, joint stiffness, or muscle tension, chiropractic treatment offers practical approaches aimed at addressing the underlying contributors to your symptoms.

What Do Chiropractors Do?
Chiropractors use a wide range of hands-on techniques to improve your body’s function. These may include:
-
Joint manipulation (spinal adjustments)
-
Massage and soft tissue techniques
-
Muscle stretching and strengthening
-
Postural and lifestyle advice
Our goal is to reduce pain, improve mobility, and support better overall movement.
What Conditions Do Chiropractors Treat?
Chiropractors commonly help with:
-
Lower back and neck pain
-
Headaches and migraines
-
Shoulder, hip, and knee injuries
-
Osteoarthritis and joint stiffness
-
Wrist, ankle, and elbow pain
-
Shoulder blade pain and spinal discomfort
Many movement-related pain conditions respond well to treatment aimed at restoring joint and soft tissue function.
What causes pain and stiffness?
There are many different tissue types in the body that can be a source of pain. In the musculoskeletal system, these include synovial joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, discs, and bursa.
When these tissues are irritated or injured, they may become sensitive and may develop an inflammatory response. This can contribute to pain, stiffness, and reduced function.
A key part of assessment is understanding how the joint and surrounding system is functioning, and how its normal movement and load tolerance may have been affected.
Treatment is then directed towards improving movement, reducing sensitivity, and supporting the system’s ability to return to normal function.
Common Contributing Factors
Two of the more common contributing factors we see are stiffness and weakness.
🔸 Stiffness
When synovial joints or muscles lose normal mobility, they may be less able to distribute forces effectively. In some cases, this can increase the likelihood of local irritation or strain.
Approaches such as joint mobilisation, soft tissue work, and movement-based strategies are often used to help restore mobility and reduce excessive tension.
🔸 Weakness
Muscles that are deconditioned or not functioning optimally may be more easily overloaded and can contribute to altered joint mechanics.
This may develop over time due to inactivity, previous injury, or persistent pain. Gradual strengthening and reconditioning are often important components of improving long-term function.
Joint Pain – a common problem
Synovial joints, particularly in the spine, are a common source of pain. The small joints at the back of the spine (facet joints) help guide movement and provide stability.
In some cases, these synovial joints can become irritated or sensitive, sometimes with a temporary inflammatory response, contributing to localised pain and reduced movement.
Treatment is typically aimed at improving joint movement and reducing irritation, along with addressing the surrounding muscles.
In this animation, the facet joint between the bottom two vertebra on the right is irritated and not moving properly. This may reduce normal spinal movement. The top two vertebrae are moving normally. A chiropractic adjustment is a short specific thrust which can improve mobility in a restricted vertebral joint. This may help reduce joint stiffness, and in some cases may decrease swelling and pain.
Movement is Medicine
Regular movement plays an important role in joint health. It helps maintain mobility, supports muscle function, and contributes to overall physical and mental wellbeing over time.
In Summary…
Joint stiffness—particularly in the spine—is a common contributor to ongoing pain. Treatment is focused on improving movement, reducing irritation, and supporting a gradual return to normal activity.
